Suma is 9 years old,she migrated from Solukhumbu region to Kathmandu with her family after earthquake in 2015.They hope to search for a better opportunity. Her father used to work in house construction site as a waged labor.
Unnfortunately, her father was not possible to afford better medical treatments for her mother. Her mother passed away due to some mental complications in 2017. Suma has onesister and one brother. One is 7 years old who is dumb, and youngest brother of Suma is 3 years old. Sushma and her brother were studying in class 2 and Nursery respectively but the youngest brother had not been to school.
Her father married another woman in 2018. The woman also had two children of her own. But she only lived with us for 1 month or so. She ran away because for this family they had only one room where all of us had to sleep and cook.
Suma told us :“My father works as labor and drinks too much. Sometimes he will not come home for 3/4 days. I am worried about it. I had to take care of my younger siblings. Cook for them, accompany them all day long, and not let them fight or get hurt. Sangita is different from other children and it is difficult for me to leave her alone. So, I dropped my school.”
We feel very sympathetic to the girl’s experience. She have joined Rainbow school now. Even though, she cannot goes to regular school due to her family problems. She goes to rainbow school with her sister and brother, and participate in different activities organized at the school.
Rainbow Yingxin school is now open and we are trying our best to provide service to children who are left without opportunities for getting education and care. We believe education is the foundation ofsocial change and it should be free. Rainbow Yingxin school is a school for parents, teachers, youth volunteers and children.
