Rainbow Volunteer Club Granted Special Consultative Status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council
— From Grassroots Practice to Global Dialogue
On 29 July 2025, the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) officially approved the recommendation of the Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations (Committee on NGOs) to grant “Special Consultative Status” to Rainbow Volunteer Club. The granting of this status marks formal recognition by the United Nations system of the organisation’s long-term practical achievements in the areas of educational innovation, child protection, gender equality, youth development, humanitarian aid, child-friendly communities, volunteer services, and social innovation.
Previously, the organisation’s application had been recommended during the 18th plenary meeting of the Committee on NGOs on 21 May 2025, and subsequently approved at the ECOSOC session on 29 July 2025.
With Special Consultative Status, Rainbow Volunteer Club will be able to:
participate in public meetings of ECOSOC and its subsidiary bodies (such as the Human Rights Council);
submit written statements, deliver oral interventions, and provide policy recommendations on topics relevant to its work;
cooperate with the UN Secretariat and relevant agencies in the areas of child health, child protection, gender equality, youth development, humanitarian aid, and community social work;
use the UN NGO platform to participate in global public affairs and international cooperation initiatives.
Through comprehensive community-based projects focused on educational exploration, child protection, gender equality, youth development, humanitarian aid, child-friendly communities, volunteer service, and public advocacy, Rainbow Volunteer Club mobilises local social forces to address issues faced by children in adversity and explores development models rooted in frontline experience and characterised by social innovation.
We understand that Special Consultative Status is not an end point, but rather a window connecting grassroots practice with global governance. Moving forward, Rainbow Volunteer Club will continue to grow from the ground up, take professional action with a broader vision, and actively engage in discussions on the UN Sustainable Development Agenda. We aim to share practical experience from China’s local communities on multilateral platforms, foster international dialogue and collaboration, and tell authentic, meaningful stories of Chinese philanthropy. Together with global partners, we will work to ensure that every child and family in vulnerable situations is seen, heard, and supported.
